Welcome to the thriving and modern communications hub deep within the Abbey's stone walls. Here you will find information on how to communicate with your Sisters and Brothers in St. Scully outside of casual conversations by the pool or enjoyable chats in the lounge. Before using the communications hub it is critical that you do yourself and the rest of your friends in the Abbey the courtesy of reading the OBSSE FAQ.

OBSSE FAQ

The OBSSE is a community. Like any community over the years we have developed our own way of doing things, our own style of communicating, our own shared history, and our own in-jokes (some of which no matter how hard you try seem to defy explanation - just ask someone here sometime why lard is so damn funny and watch them try to explain the chain of events for your own amusement). The best way to understand the goings on in these parts is to read the OBSSE FAQ which is stored at Brother Colin's OBSSE Rules and Information Site. In fact the FAQ is required reading before you decide to join us on either the mailing list or chat. If you have any questions after visiting Brother Colin's site most any Abbey member will surely answer them - you'll find we are a friendly bunch - or you can write to the OBSSE Elders with your questions at askobsse@yahoo.com.

Chat

The OBSSE holds two regularly scheduled weekly chats: Friday nights at 10 p.m. EST / 7 p.m. PST and Sunday nights after the X-Files has aired. While the chat channel is open at other times it is to be used as an OBSSE community meeting place only and proper behavior is expected and required at all times. Chat channel abuse will result in your being banned from participating in the channel in the future. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES are chats in the OBSSE chat room to be logged.

Chat is held at IRC server us.chatnet.org on the #obsse channel. If you need more help in accessing the OBSSE chatroom, go here.

Mailing List

THE OBSSE MAILING LISTS IS CURRENTLY CLOSED
NO NEW SUBSCRIPTIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED

The OBSSE has a large and busy mailing list that has been in existence for about three years. Before you join our list in addition to reading the OBSSE FAQ you should read the mailing list rules. Since we have been around a while and many of us have even met each other in person, it is a good idea to spend a little time lurking and learning our ways before jumping into the fray. We think you'll enjoy it once you get the hang of it. It's a popular list at over 500 members and a list that prides itself on its humor and respectful behavior towards others. The mailing list is only open to those over the age of 18. If you are not over 18, do not join the list - after all we all know what The Blessed One thinks about liars, right? Our younger members are welcome in the Abbey (as long as you stick to the virgin Scullyritas in the lounge), but the mailing list is only for adults.

The list is a Scully list, not a Gillian Anderson list (though we do from time to time discuss her other acting projects) or a shipper/noromo/whatever list. It is used for general discussion of the X-files and Dana Scully, distribution of OBSSE news and information, and discussion of interest to the OBSSE community. It is administered by Sister Autumn (assisted in a technical capacity by Sister DanaMax) with the help of the other Elders.

Subscribe/Unsubscribe: To subscribe or unsubscribe to the OBSSE Mailing List via the web interface, go here. To subscribe or unsubscribe to the list via email, send a message to join-obsse@lyris.unc.edu or leave-obsse@lyris.unc.edu. Unsub instructions are also at the bottom of every post so it is not all that hard.

The subscribe command should read:
subscribe obsse your_name

You may not be subscribed to the mailing list automatically, but a message will be sent to Sister Autumn requesting your admittance.

It is recommended that you set a password.
This can be done via the web interface, or by sending a message to lyris@lyris.unc.edu with the following content:
set obsse pw=mypassword

Other List Settings: You can change additional settings by sending commands to lyris@lyris.unc.edu, here are a few examples:

SETTING MEMBERSHIP TO DIGEST MODE:
set obsse digest

SETTING MEMBERSHIP TO INDEX MODE:
set obsse index

SETTING MEMBERSHIP TO DISCUSSION MODE:
set obsse mail

TEMPORARILY SUSPENDING MAIL FROM THE LIST:
set obsse nomail

DETERMINING YOUR MEMBERSHIP SETTINGS:
query obsse

Posting to the List: You must be a subscriber to post messages. Sending mail to this address will distribute it to all the members of the mailing list: obsse@lyris.unc.edu

Questions?: Questions about the OBSSE Mailing List should be directed to the list administrator, Sister Autumn. Of course, the OBSSE Elders reserve the right to excommunicate anyone from the list who does not behave themselves. (It's ours. We made it.)

MAILING LIST NOW CLOSED: With 600 members and the end of the X-Files approaching the OBSSE mailing list is now closed to new members.
